SMALLER ON THE INSIDE A millimeter-long tardigrade is seen walking on a piece of moss in this color-enhanced electron micrograph. Tardigrades are small, water-dwellling animals, part of a group called “polyextremophiles” — organisms that are known to be able to go for decades without food or water; survive temperatures from near absolute zero to well above the boiling point of water; to survive pressures from near zero to well above that on ocean floors; and to survive direct exposure to dangerous radiations. Hell, these things have even survived being stuck outside a space shuttle launched into orbit. Also, the producers at Dr. Who need to make them into villains for an episode or two, right quick.
