Bake That, Linguist!

Things that I find to be interestingly convenient…

How people never describe England as being “exotic.”

Apparently, Morocco is exotic.

Hawaii is exotic.

Bali is exotic.

Nigeria is exotic.

Brazil is exotic.

China is exotic.

…but not England or France or Italy or Denmark or Sweden or Germany or even the United States.

Interesting how we use language to label what something is or is not. Interesting how we typically don’t analyze why we do so. Because something that is exotic is, “foreign in origin; strikingly unusual or strange in effect or appearance; uniquely new.”

I can say that I’ve only ever heard about one European country being described as exotic, and it was only one time: Spain.

I have never been to Europe. I have never left this country. Every country outside of my own is exotic to me.
